The symbols plus the designs may not signify much to a lay person when it is made on a piece of cloth.  However, the minute it is made into a flag a symbol of an organization, state, or country, the significance is self evident and the simplest person would attach lots of respect to it.  While the respect garnered by the flag could be due to Nationalist values, it also can have the effect of gathering a nation’s spirit behind it.  However, it is not just about pride –  there are some practical reasons to that a flag is used for.  If you have a war on and there are ships plying the nights, the mere sporting of a national flag can mean the difference between life and death. The flags of North America are varied in their designs.  The most recognized of the flags here are the United States’ Stars and stripes and the Maple Leaf of Canada.  Here is a look into the design and history of the flags of North American countries.  The Canadian flag has a red maple leaf displayed on a vertical white strip, flanked on either side by two red vertical strips. Trinidad and Tobago has a diagonal black strip (bordered with white strips) traversing a red rectangle.

Mexico has a vertical tricolour.  The colours are green, white, and red.  It also displays the national coat of arms in the centre of the broader white strip. Haiti has a bicoloured flag which has horizontal coloured bands of red and blue on which in the centre overlapping both bands is a white panel that has the coat of arms.
