Australia and Oceania form the smallest of continents.  Here is a location description of same.  It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and the Southern Oceans.  The land mass consistes of the mainland of Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea (eastern half of it), Tasmania, and thousands of tropical islands of Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia all in the south of Pacific Ocean.  The number of countries here are 14 with 12 dependent territories which are overseas.  The largest country is Australia. 86 percent of the continent’s area is with Australia, one reason that the continent has Australia as part of its name.  Nauru is the smallest independent country.  It is so small that you need only an hour to drive around the country.

As always, it is interesting to learn about some of the lesser know countries and let us start with Kiribati.  It is an island nation.  There are 33 atolls and island reefs and Banaba, a raised coral island.  Total land area comes to 800 square kilometres.  The spread of the islands of the country is so high that it touches the equator as well as the 180 meridian.  The most populated is the Tarawa Atoll which has more than half its population. Next let us look at Micronesia is an independent sovereign nation (island. Together it has around 607 islands with a combined area of land at 702 square kilometres.  It is the 14th largest exclusive economic zone.   Next, Palau, is an island country.  It has a very small population at 17,948 with an area of 465 square kilometres.  There are 250 islands as part of the country. Fiji is also an island country in Melanesia region with around 18,300 square kilometres of land in 330 islands and 500 islets.  Only 110 of the islands are permanently inhabited.

List Of Countries European Union: The actual idea of the European Union is supposed to be years back in 1950 in the month of May and day of the 9th.  Therefore this day is celebrated as the Europe Day.  Initially there were six countries who signed the agreement of the European Economic Community.  It was signed in the year 1957.  The countries were Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
