What is a capital?  It forms the seat of power for a nation or a state to function.  The country’s functioning is determined mainly by how its capital functions.  The success of the governance of the country is determined by how efficiently those in power are able to administer their power through the capital city.  Capital city of a state can be selected based on demographics, climatic conditions, etc.  There are cases where the capital can change for set parts of the year depending on the climate of the state.  These may be called summer capitals and winter capitals.  Capital cities for nations usually remain unchanged unless there is a big upheaval in the political climate of a nation.

Now here are some interesting facts about the capitals of the world.  The facts are picked based on how they stand apart from the rest or based on some information which is interesting and worth sharing.  Abuja is the capital of Nigeria now.  However, from 1914 to 1991, Lagos was the capital of Nigeria. Bern, the capital of Switzerland is called the defacto capital. Brussels is the defacto capital of the European Union.  While Dodoma is the official and legislative capital of Tanzania, its former capital Dar es Salaam is still considered to be the seat of power with the presidency, ministries of government, judiciary all from there.  Hong Kong is the capital of Hong Kong which is a special administrative region of China.  It was a former British dependent territory.

In India, Kolkata was the capital till 1911 under the British.  Then it was changed to New Delhi. Quito the capital of Ecuador is known as the capital at the highest point at 2850m.  Singapore’s capital is Singapore and is known as a city state.  The same goes for the smallest country Vatican City.
