The actual idea of the European Union is supposed to be years back in 1950 in the month of May and day of the 9th.  Therefore this day is celebrated as the Europe Day.  Initially there were six countries who signed the agreement of the European Economic Community.  It was signed in the year 1957.  The countries were Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Slowly other countries joined up with Ireland, Denmark, and UK joining in 1973.  The  joined Greece in the 80s along with the Spaniards and the Portuguese.  As years progressed, more countries joined and currently the member nations number to 28.

The European Union offers trade without borders with a single market.  There is a single currency also in use with the Euro being used by 19 members of the Eurozone.  It has its own institutions and parliament.  The citizens of the Union in the Schengen Area have the right for free movement at borders without passport controls.  If we think of it as a country, it has an area of around 4324782 sq. km.  The population would be at 510 million at last count. The market that has been developed is based on a system of laws that are standardized and applies to all the members.  Such common policies are applied in not just trade, but agriculture, fisheries, as well as development of regional areas.  The Euro was introduced in the monetary union in 1999 and completely established in 2002.

In 2014, the GDP for the EU was at above 18.49 trillion USD.  That was at almost 24% of the global nominal GDP.  The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union in 2012.  The European Union was a product of the need to create something which countered the extreme nationalism that came after the World War II.
