North American Countries:


The northern half of the new world is called the North American continent. It has the Arctic Ocean in the North.  Towards the east is the Atlantic Ocean.  In the west and south is the Pacific Ocean.  It has its only overland boarder with the southern part of the new world which runs along the boundary of Colombia and Panama.  There are a total of 23 independent states in North America.  The most famous of this is the United States while the largest is Canada.  Together they occupy almost 79% of the continent’s whole area.  The smallest countries are islands which are part of the Caribbean called Saint Kitts and Nevis.

The smallest and most densely populated country in the central part of North America is El Salvador.  It had endured many political and economic upheavals culminating in the Salvadoran Civil War. This civil war ended by 1992.  Next we have the island country Grenada which also has six small islands.  It is also called the Island of Spice as it has nutmeg and mace crops.  Its national bird is the Grenada dove.  Another famous Island nation is Cuba known for its resistance to the United States of America.  Havana is its largest city and also capital.  It was a colony of Spain till 1898.  It has been a communist state from 1965.  It has a variety of ethnicities.

Another important landmark nation in Central America is the Honduras.  The language used is Spanish.  The country holds the infamous record of having the world’s highest murder rate.  It is rich for its natural resources. These include coffee, minerals, tropical fruits, and a developing textile industry.  Next up is Costa Rica which was ruled by the Spanish until it was fully independent in 1847.  It does not have a permanent standing army.
