Number Of Countries In The World Let us look at how a country is determined as a country by the world.  The sovereignty of a country is determined by the UN.  The process is slightly lengthy.  First the Security Council has to have a consent vote.  Not just that.  The permanent members have to give their consent.  The permanent members are China, USA, UK, France, Russia, and China.  Once they give consent, the matter is put to vote by the UN general assembly.  The vote has to be one by at least two-thirds of the votes.  These prolonged and detailed measures ensure that the country is accepted by most of the other countries and hence have a good diplomatic tie with all.

Number Of Countries In The World:

As per the above there are 193 countries accepted as independent countries worldwide.  Two others who are recognized as countries are two UN observers which are the Holy See (Vatican) and Palestine.  The UN observer status grants them international recognition.  The Vatican has relations which are bilateral with the majority of the world.  They have 180 independent diplomatic missions in states and organizations which are international. Same way, Palestine has garnered recognition from 137 countries of the world.

There are whole big list of partially recognized countries in the world. They are not however included in the list of countries; with two exceptions. Taiwan is the first amongst them.  China claims it to be part of their country.  However, Taiwan has recognition from 22 countries of which one is a UN observer.   To put it simply it functions more or less like an independent state and hence its recognition as a country although acceptance is not completely there.  The second is Kosovo which is claimed to be part of Serbia but like Taiwan is independent and recognized more as a country.  Hence, we can safely surmise that as per UN we have a total of 197 countries.
