What can be defined as a country in official parlance?  A country should be a nation which has self governance with its own authorities plus it needs to be recognized by its sovereignty by the international community, basically the UN.  With these criterion in place we have 197 countries in the world.  Of these 193 are fully recognized by the United Nations.  Other four countries included are  2 as permanent observers and 2 which are recognized partially by other representative countries.   Now you may wonder who are the ones who are not recognized.  That is a totally different set of information and would not be discussed in this article, but would be an interesting read at some other time.  Just so that your interest is piqued, there is a long standing dispute on the sovereignty of Tibet by China and the Tibetans which has been going on for some time and the leader of the Tibetan people, Dalai Lama has been leading the protest.

Now let us take a look at the list of countries.  There seems to be a clear majority on the number of countries who prefer to start their name with ‘S‘. This is followed by ‘M‘ which has 19 numbers, closely followed by ‘C’ and ‘B‘ at 18 and 17.  There are no countries starting with the letter W and X.  The ones with least usage is tied between Q (Qatar), Y (Yemen), and O (Oman) at one each.  Z comes next with usage twice.

Thus there are many such interesting things that you can find out from the list.  For example, if Myanmar’s name had not been changed from Burma to Myanmar, then the count above would have changed with regard to alphabet usage.  All of us know that India declared its independence on August 15, 1947 when India would have been included in the list presumably.  Proud moment for all Indians.

List Of Countries European Union: The actual idea of the European Union is supposed to be years back in 1950 in the month of May and day of the 9th.  Therefore this day is celebrated as the Europe Day.  Initially there were six countries who signed the agreement of the European Economic Community.  It was signed in the year 1957.  The countries were Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
