When you consider the supercontinent of the Americas, South America forms the complete southern part of it.  At its west is the Pacific Ocean; in the north, apart from the North American continent, there is the Atlantic Ocean, which also covers the east.  Northwest has the Caribbean Sea.  It is connected to North America at the Panama and Colombia state boundary.  There are three dependent territories and twelve independent countries here.  The largest and most known of the countries is Brazil which actually constitutes 50% of the main land area.  They also account for 52% of the territory.  We should also mention the smallest country, Suriname. The country originally had indigenous tribes and like many other countries in this region was explored and fought over by the European nations before the Dutch started ruling it in the 17th century.  It gained its independence in 1975.

Another prominent country of South America is Argentina.  It is located to the southern cone of the continent sharing space with Chile.  It shares borders with Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, and Uruguay.  Peru is another South American country which is bordered by Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Chile.  It is extremely bio diverse in nature.  It has a very ancient culture from the Norte Chico civilization to the Inca Empire. The Spanish conquered them in the 16 century.  Independence was proclaimed in 1821, or rather proclaimed then and won after 3 years of struggle.  The city

Colombia is a transcontinental country with its major part in South America. It has territories in central America.  It has a very ethnically and linguistically diverse background which gives it a rich cultural heritage. It has the Amazon rainforests, tropical grasslands.  Ecologically it is megadiverse country part of the world’s 17.
