A flag is not just a piece of cloth with some interesting colours and symbols on it.  It stands as a symbol.  It becomes an identity of the nation, organization, etc., that it stands for and it is publicly displayed to represent the entity.  The uses, thus, are many, from a very practical use where some visual indication is required, say of a ship’s identity in extreme weather conditions.  It can be the declaration of the independence of a country or declaration that a new authority is in charge.  It could be put to stake a claim to a country’s ownership of a place or the conquering of a mountain by the team from a country.  It can be very interesting to study flags and this study is vexillology.  The meaning of the word of course is banner or flag and is based in Latin.

It is without doubt understandable that the most importance in the world is given to the national flags and/or the most respected international organizations of the world.  Let us study the African National Flags.  You would see that most of them are adorned with stripes except a few like Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, Somalia, and Eritrea.  The colours include red, green, yellow, and black.  The most recognized of the flags is from South Africa with its Y shaped green stripe placed horizontally on it.

Algeria has Green and While vertical rectangles with red coloured star and a crescent.  Benin has something very simple – one horizontal green rectangle and two horizontal rectangles adjacent to it, yellow on top of red.  Botswana has a sky blue flag with a horizontal strip of black through its middle bordered in white.  Mali seems to have just made some changes to the Benin flag with the yellow and red rectangles no made vertical with yellow adjacent to the green one.
