Man has progressed from barter system years ago.  It was an effective way of trading goods and services in the ancient times.  Imagine though how it would have been if you had to still depend on the barter system to trade for goods and services.  No currency, just bartering.  Your purse would have been real heavy.  In fact, the purses that we have currently would not suffice to store the cows, sacks of flour, salt, or whatever it is that the world used for bartering.  Thankfully, we do have currencies now which means services and goods are more easy to purchase.  They can be considered as legal tender.

Currencies are currently available in the form or paper and coins in the hard cash.  They cannot be printed or minted by anyone.  The central bank is authorized to do so and if anyone else tries to, it is called counterfeit and can lead to one getting arrested by the police force of the country.  There are security measures in place in all currencies to counter counterfeiting. In fact during war, many countries tend to produce counterfeit currency to destabilize the economy of the other warring nation.

In Australia and Oceania, the currencies that are most prominent are three in number.  They are the Australian Dollar, the United States Dollar, and the New Zealand Dollar.  The CFP franc is also commonly used in the French overseas territories here.  The Cook Islands have their dollar, called the Cook Islands dollar.

Other than the dollars, we have the Samoan tala, Tongan pa’anga, Vanuatu vatu, and the Papua New Guinean kina.  Some of the places using the USD are the American Samoa, Guam,  Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, and Wake Island.  Pitcairn Islands (UK), uses the New Zealand dollar.
