There used to be barter system in the world.  You exchanged goods for goods or goods for services. Although effective this would have been cumbersome. As days progressed, man progressed to currencies as legal tender.  They were in the form of paper or minted from metals into coins.  Nations print or mint currencies as per their requirements.  There will be fractional forms of the currencies used as well in the coins and paper notes used.  When currencies are minted or printed nations always run the risk of counterfeiters doing the same.  There have been cases where nations who have turned foes or terrorist groups have funded counterfeiting of a country’s currencies in order to run havoc with its economy and thus bring it to its knees.  Therefore, lots of security measures are put into place so that the counterfeit note can be recognized.  The central banks of countries usually circulate currencies as per the direction of the government.

In South America, the currencies used belong specifically to the countries. The only exception would be the French Guiana territory which uses the Euro and Ecuador which uses the USD.  Others stick to their own.  The currencies are not well know across the world and the only one which comes in the first 20 of most-traded is the Brazil Real.  Peso is the currency of Chile.  It has been in circulation from 1975.  The code for the Chilean Peso is CLP.  The Guyanese dollar forms the currency used in Guyana.  The code used for this is GYD.

The Brazilian Real has a currency code BRL.  Its fractional unit is the centavos.  100 centavos make a Real.  There has been some issues with the economy of Brazil which caused the Real to lose value against the USD. However, it has reached a ratio of 3.2 BRL for a USD by June of this year.
